Tropea la perla del Tirreno. Imponente città dalle origini “mitiche”, domina uno dei tratti costieri più affascinanti di tutto il Tirreno: la “Costa degli Dei”. La “perla” del Tirreno è da sempre nota per le sue spiagge incantevoli e per quel mare trasparente e cristallino, ma forse non tutti sanno che quel fascino così straordinario è soprattutto frutto di una storia antichissima.

Insignita di numerosi riconoscimenti, Tropea figura spesso nelle classifiche delle spiagge più belle del mondo. Il britannico Sunday Time la annovera tra le più belle spiagge d’Europa e non è un caso se la località figura nelle classifiche delle migliori mete balneari su scala internazionale. Per chi fosse scettico o semplicemente curioso di capirne il perchè, il modo migliore è di raggiungerla per le proprie vacanze al mare e scoprirlo con i propri occhi, anche alla fine dell’estate, quando il clima ancora lo consente e quando le spiagge sono meno prese d’assalto dal turismo.

Non si sa davvero dove guardare quando si raggiunge questa meraviglia incastonata lungo la Costa degli Dei, tante sono le bellezze che la magnifica Perla del Tirreno ha in serbo per i suoi visitatori. Tropea, infatti, si erge scenografica su un promontorio creando una panoramica terrazza sul mare apprezzata sin da epoca romana. La città vanta un nucleo storico di rara bellezza che si sviluppa su un terrazzo a picco sul mare dinanzi al quale emerge l’isolotto che custodisce, sin dagli inizi del I secolo d.C. l’antico santuario benedettino di Santa Maria dell’Isola, oggi collegato alla terraferma da un lembo di terra.

Tropea rises scenically on a promontory, creating a breathtaking terrace overlooking the sea, admired since Roman times.

The city boasts a historic center of rare beauty, perched on a cliff above the sea. In front of it stands a small island that has housed the ancient Benedictine sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola since the early 1st century AD. Today, the island is connected to the mainland by a strip of land.

Tourism in Tropea: An International Destination

In recent decades, Tropea has become one of the most sought-after international tourist destinations. Since 2019, it has experienced remarkable success, establishing itself as one of the most coveted locations in Italy. In 2021, it was named Borgo dei Borghi, a prestigious recognition that further solidified its reputation as a top-tier destination.

The combination of natural beauty, historical heritage, and warm hospitality attracts thousands of visitors each year—from Italian tourists to travelers from across Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan.

Tropea is also an ideal base for exploring the Costa degli Dei, offering excursions to the Aeolian Islands, boat trips along the coast, and visits to nearby villages.

Calabria falls south of the glamorous Amalfi coast. This 500-miles of coastline and mountain range stretches down to the tip of Sicily. Much of the thickly forested hills have been designated as national parks, however, this remains one of the country’s least-known regions among the British. The Italians mainly come here for the slower pace of life and the stunning beaches. Beyond the beaches, pretty towns are reached by wiggly roads that snake through olive groves and hilltop villages, fortresses and castles.

The main airport in this region is Lamezia airport. From here, head south on the Tyrrhenian coastal road which runs past Calabria’s most attractive towns. The town of Tropea is built on a cliff where the houses seem to blend into the rock face. Below the cliffs you will find the most glorious white, sand beach bordered by trees which offers clear blue waters to play in. Beach relaxation and snorkeling (there are a surprising number of fish species off the shores of Tropea) are simply wonderful here.

IsolaTropea’s most photographed attraction is the Benedictine Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola. The Sanctuary rises up on a high, rocky outcrop surrounded by the beach and the sparkling sea. Within the town there are many 17th- and 18th-Century palazzi to stroll through. Beyond the city walls you will find vineyards and hillsides that are a mass of citrus and olive groves.

May, late September and October are brilliant months to explore this underrated region whilst avoiding the crowds.
